Divorce Coach: Helping Clients Stress Less and Save

Let’s not sugar coat stuff here. Divorce sucks. But, working with a divorce coach can make it suck a little less and even cost a little less.

The Holmes-Rahe Stress Scale ranks divorce as the #2 most stressful life event that you can experience – second only to death of a spouse.

Divorce means everything about life as you’ve known it is changing.

And that can be frightening. Especially when you don’t understand the process or your options. And if you’re afraid, angry or overwhelmed (or all three), you may not be doing your best thinking. The emotional toll of divorce can make smart people do not-so-smart things.

Read more here about how your lizard brain can make you crazy during divorce. Truth is that fear causes stress. So, what can you do to manage the fear and stress of divorce?

I say this so often I feel like I should get a tattoo, but I’ll keep saying it because it’s true.

The antidote to fear is knowledge.

And that is exactly where divorce coaching comes to the rescue.

What a Divorce Coach Does

A personal divorce coach walks right along side you holding your hand (even though it might be virtual) to guide you through the murky waters of divorce. You wouldn’t take off on an African safari without hiring a guide to help you navigate the unseen dangers, but many people jump into divorce on their own. Or they rely on their $400/hr attorney for every need.

A CDC Certified Divorce Coach® coach will prepare you for the process, help you manage your emotions, improve your resiliency and set you on a course to confidently manage life on your own.

Check out this article from Divorce Magazine that explains more about the benefits of adding a divorce coach to your team.

Could you use help with:

  • Deciding if divorce is right for you?
  • Avoiding the 6 biggest mistakes in divorce?
  • Making the best possible decisions for your future – with confidence?
  • Understanding the short-term and long-term financial impact of your options?
  • Saving money by being a prepared client when meeting with your attorney, accountant, financial planner or realtor?
  • Communicating directly so you are heard and can get what you need?

Or what about?

  • Learning to avoid getting your buttons pushed and co-parent like a boss?
  • Planning and budgeting for the new life you deserve?
  • Staying on track for legal paperwork and deadlines?
  • Crunching the numbers to create the data you need to make decisions?
  • Encouragement to take the high road and behave in a way you’ll be proud to look back on?
  • Coping with challenges like job changes, post-divorce dating and co-parenting?

The American Bar Association lists divorce coaching as one of the most common dispute resolution processes and says:

“Divorce coaching is a flexible, goal oriented process designed to support, motivate, and guide people going through divorce to help them make the best possible decisions for their future, based on their particular interests, needs, and concerns.”

Does a Divorce Coach Replace My Lawyer?

No. A divorce coach doesn’t replace your family law attorney, but works on your team along with them. You’ll still need to consult with a lawyer for legal specifics, but you can prep with your coach – who is likely more accessible and charges a much lower hourly rate. Bonus for you! Your attorney will appreciate having direction and priorities from you. Because when you know what you want and can communicate that clearly, then your lawyer can do their job more effectively. Another score for you.

Town & Country Magazine’s recent article “The T&C Guide to Divorce: The 5 People You Need on Your Team” lists a divorce coach as a one of the key players people should consider adding to their team during divorce.

In states that support Collaborative Divorce, you and your spouse may each have your own divorce coach, in contrast to a financial neutral, parenting coordinator or mediator that you share.
